The Perfect Photo for Your 3D Figurine: 10 Tips for a Stunning Result

The quality of your 3D figurine depends heavily on one thing: the photo you send to the AI. A well-thought-out shot and you get a remarkably accurate figurine. A rushed snapshot, and the result may lack detail. Here are the practical tips to put all the odds on your side.

1. Nail Your Lighting

Lighting is 80% of the job. Favor natural light from a window over a ceiling fixture that creates harsh shadows on the face. Avoid backlighting: if the light source is behind you, your face falls into shadow and the AI struggles to capture your features.

2. Look Straight at the Camera

A head-on gaze lets the AI perfectly reconstruct your face's symmetry. Profile shots or overhead angles produce less accurate results. Keep your head straight, chin slightly lifted, like for an ID photo… but way more fun.

3. Use a Neutral Background

A plain wall, a light sheet, or even a colorful but uniform backdrop works great. The busier the background (shelves, plants, other people), the harder the AI has to work to isolate your face, and the more you risk artifacts.

4. Pick the Right Distance

The ideal framing: a portrait crop, from the upper chest to just above the head. Too far away, and your face lacks pixels and detail. Too close, and perspective distorts your features (bigger nose, disappearing ears).

5. Remove Glasses and Distracting Accessories

Glasses, caps, scarves, or masks can hide essential parts of your face. Want glasses on your figurine? Don't worry: the Minivatar editor lets you add them afterward. Start with a clear face.

6. Tie Your Hair Back or Keep It Natural

Hair falling over your eyes disrupts feature detection. Clear your forehead and show your ears if possible. The AI will then sculpt a hairstyle that matches your vibe on the final figurine.

7. Go for a Neutral Expression or a Slight Smile

Grimaces, wide-open mouths, or closed eyes complicate the AI's task. A relaxed face, maybe with a subtle smile, gives the best result. Want a figurine with a big grin? No worries, the style you pick will handle that.

8. Check the Resolution

A blurry or pixelated photo, even with every other criterion met, is still a bad starting point. Take a high-resolution photo with a recent smartphone, and avoid digital zooms that degrade the image.

9. Think About Orientation

A vertical (portrait) photo is almost always preferable. It naturally frames the face and makes better use of the usable space. Horizontal photos cropped into portrait often lose quality.

10. Try Several Shots

Our little secret: take 3 or 4 photos in different conditions and generate a figurine for each. You'll quickly see which one gives the best result. With a bit of practice, you'll instantly know which photo is "figurine-ready."
