Why SLA resin, not PLA
Most of the "cheap custom figurines" you find online are printed in PLA, a consumer-grade filament. It's fast and affordable, but you can see it instantly: the print lines are visible, fine details are mushed, and the face rarely resembles the original photo.
UV-cured photopolymer resin, printed on professional SLA printers, plays in a different league. Vertical resolution sits around 25 to 50 microns, versus 100 to 300 microns on FDM. The result: facial morphology actually tracks the photo. Resin fabric drapes like fabric. That's the gap that lets a Minivatar custom resin figurine stand next to studio-grade miniature blanks.
A paint-ready piece
The figurine arrives as raw resin, supports removed, lightly sanded, fully cleaned. All you need to do is:
- Prime it (spray or brush) with a resin-compatible primer
- Lay down base coats with miniature acrylics (Citadel, Vallejo, AK, Scale75…)
- Add shadows, highlights and details at whatever level you're comfortable with
- Seal with varnish (matte, satin or gloss) to protect your work
